How Does the 2026 World Cup Group Stage Work?

The 2026 FIFA World Cup expands to 48 teams for the first time, split into 12 groups of 4. Each team plays 3 matches in their group. Points are awarded: 3 for a win, 1 for a draw, 0 for a loss.

The top 2 teams from each of the 12 groups automatically advance to the Round of 32 (24 teams). Additionally, the 8 best third-place finishers across all 12 groups also advance, bringing the Round of 32 total to 32 teams. The remaining 4 third-place teams are eliminated.
